I work with collage because I enjoy the tactile pleasure of cutting and pasting. When I was a freshman in high school there was a girl who was a senior who did a huge self-portrait made entirely out of cut newspaper paper. I thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I ditched drawing that day and never looked back.
My aesthetic is extremely feminine and is inspired by editorial fashion illustration and fashion photography. Being a synesthete, I’m sensitive to sound. Sounds cause waves of color to swirl through my head. The slightest shift in my auditory environment can totally shift the aesthetic on whatever I‘m working on. I spend a lot of time carefully curating what music will be playing while I work. Color is a big component of my work. Each series has a specific color story, similar to a fashion line. Each color is like a different bolt of fabric or trim. It‘s cut cut up and reassembled to create a cohesive piece.
Over the last few years I’ve been incorporating more and more digital media. It started with using Photoshop to tweak images of my collages so they’d look better when uploaded online, and eventually evolved into creating digital pieces that were then printed and used as canvas for other mixed-media work. In the not so distant future, I hope to incorporate large scale projections, animation, and video. I see the work evolving into installation.
